My 4 day weekend morning at the end of the week reads:
• Why it seems everything we knew about the global economy is no longer true: As the eyes of the world were on the pandemic, the war in Ukraine and China, the paths to prosperity and common interests grew darker. (New York Times)
• The advertising industry relies on AI: At the Cannes Lions, the biggest publicity event of the year, we couldn’t escape discussions on ChatGPT or Midjourney, even during yacht parties. (Voice)
• How America’s New Favorite Beer Hammered Out the Competition: Modelo Especial dethroning Bud Light lasted a decade and its crowning glory began with a man who blocked a $20 billion deal (the wall street journal)
• Crypto’s Most Powerful Woman Speaks Out As Crisis Rocks Binance: Behind the scenes, Yi He is an influential broker in the $1.2 trillion crypto market. Now the company she helped start with Changpeng “CZ” Zhao is under threat from regulators. (Bloomberg)
• You hate your job. ‘Rage Applying’ probably isn’t the answer. Quick CV submissions usually don’t work – even when they do, the next job can be just as bad as the last. (the wall street journal)
• Is the long COVID linked to mental illness? The research is preliminary. The topic is loaded. But the question has a very real basis. (Slate)
• How to steal a masterpiece: advice from the world’s greatest art thief: First, said the art thief, forget the movies. Skylight entrances, smoke bombs, and shootouts can be cinematic, but unless you want to go to jail, they’re terrible tactics for stealing art. The violence and destruction in a museum only minimizes your chances of success. Art crime, according to Stéphane Breitwieser, is best accomplished when no one knows it is happening. (Time)
• Everyone loves to read. Why are we so afraid of it? Book bans, chatbots, educational warfare: what reading means has become a minefield. (New York Times)
• Kevin McCarthy’s Trump gaffe exposes Republican dilemma: Criticism of the President has been fairly muted, reaction from Trump supporters has been anything but. “McCarthy stepped in,” says Bryan Lanza, a former Trump staffer who remains close to the former president. “(McCarthy) can’t afford to be seen as soft on Trump or he loses his presidency.” (BBC)
• If you love movies, you should be worried about what’s on at Turner Classic Movies: TCM has been a joy since its launch in 1994, and has never wavered. With me, it has earned its place as the default channel: of all the channels and streaming services on TV, it’s the one that, more than any other, wasn’t down and didn’t need to be repaired. (NPR)
Be sure to check out our Masters in Business interview this weekend with Ilana Weinstein, Founder and CEO of IDW Group, the leading recruiter of fund managers and traders for many of the biggest hedge funds. She previously worked at Goldman Sachs and Boston Consulting Group, and is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania and Harvard Business School.
