JD.com heats the artificial intelligence (IA) race in China with the release of its big language model, even as regulators prepare to introduce regulations to manage Generative AI services.
China’s second-largest online shopping platform, JD.com, said its ChatRhino(Or yanxi in Chinese) has been customized to support multiple verticals such as logistics, retail, healthcare, and finance. The big language model consists of 70% general data and 30% “native intelligent” supply chain data, said the e-commerce player, which has a logistics branch as well as a healthcare business unit. health.

ChatRhino has a base of 100 billion parameters, up from the 10 billion parameter benchmark clocked by its predecessor model Vega early last year. Vega topped the General Language Understanding Evaluation (GLUE) list, surpassing models from Microsoft and Facebook, JD.com said in a statement Thursday.
GLUE measurements and classifies natural language processing according to nine tasks, covering a range of “data set sizes, text genres and degrees of difficulty”. Open AI GPT-4 reportedly, although unconfirmed by the company, over 1 trillion parameters based on eight models. Its previous GPT-3 model has more than 175 billion parameters, while GPT-2 runs on 1.5 billion.
ChatRhino offers more than 100 inference training and optimization tools that JD.com says support domain-specific application development, allowing customers to more quickly create their own specialized models. Vendor says a generative AI model for the healthcare industry, for example, can be built in “minutes” with two algorithmic engineers, compared to the traditional method which typically requires a week and at least 10 scientists .
JD Health’s own big-language model, Jingyi Qianxun, is built on ChatRhino and trained on medical scenarios to automatically deploy services, including telemedicine, according to JD.com.

E-commerce merchants can also use ChatRhino to create a range of visuals, marketing posters and product images, from a product image. The AI model can reduce production costs for each visual element by 90%, reducing the time needed to complete the task from a week to half a day, JD.com said.
Interim laws to guide generative AI deployments
ChatRhino’s launch comes the same week China introduced interim regulations to manage generation In-country AI services.
To take effect from Aug. 15, the new laws are necessary to ensure the healthy development of technology and safeguard both national security and public interests, the Chinese government said.

In a joint statement published by various agencies, including the Cyberspace Administration of China (CAC) and the Ministry of Science and Technology, the government noted that while generative AI has created new opportunities for economic and social development, it also brings challenges such as fake news and data privacy and security risks.
The interim legislation outlines various measures aimed at facilitating the rational development of technology, while protecting national and public interests and the legal rights of citizens and businesses, the statement noted.
Generative AI developers, for example, will need to ensure that their model pre-training and optimization processes are done in accordance with the law. These include the use of data from legitimate sources that adhere to intellectual property rights. If personal data is used, the consent of the person must be obtained or it must be done in accordance with the regulations in force.

Steps should also be taken to improve the quality of training data, including its accuracy, objectivity and diversity.
Under the interim laws, generative AI service providers take legal responsibility for the information generated and its security. They will have to sign service level agreements with the users of their service, thus clarifying the rights and obligations of each.
When illegal content is discovered, the service provider must take various measures such as preventing its transmission and rectifying its use in pattern formation. The competent authority will also be informed.
Additionally, service providers should take necessary action if a user engages in illegal activities while using the generative AI service. These include restriction functions, suspension or termination of service, maintenance of relevant records and notification to the competent authority.
Service providers who violate the new laws will be subject to penalties provided for in the various relevant laws existing in China, including the internet security Law, Data Security Law and Privacy Act. In cases where there are no provisions for violations, a warning will be issued alongside order corrections which must be executed within a given time frame. Failure to comply with these orders may result in suspension of services.

China published in April a preview of legislationclaiming that the development of generative AI technologies such as ChatGPT could lead to abuse if not regulated. Separate legislation came into force in January which sets out the basics rules to prevent “deep synthesis” technology, including deepfakes and virtual reality, against abuse. Anyone using these services should label images accordingly and refrain from exploiting the technology for activities that violate local regulations.
In May, the Chinese government unveiled plans to build AI industrial centers and technology platforms across the country to support research and development work. So far, development plans have been launched for 18 national AI pilot areas and 32 innovation platforms, including Beijing and Tianjin.
In addition to JD.com, local players such as Tencent And Ali Baba also announced efforts to offer or integrate generative AI into their products. Alibaba Cloud in April unveiled its great language AI platform, called Tongyi Qianwen, which is currently available to customers in China for beta testing and as an API for developers. The Chinese cloud provider has also introduces a partnership program to drive the development of AI applications for verticals, including finance and petrochemicals.
