The list of star wars projects which have started and which have never seen the light of day is very long. Heck, we even made one ourselves. However, arguably the most intriguing of them was a Boba Fett movie by director James Mangold. Mangold, director of Logan, the glutton, And 3h10 to Yuma was working on a Fett movie after Josh Trank and before The Mandalorianbut it was eventually abandoned
In a new interview with Happy Sad ConfusedMangold—who stayed with Lucasfilm to make Indiana Jones and the Dial of Fate—said what he was doing with Boba Fett was quite different from what audiences saw of the character later. “At the time I was doing it, I was probably scaring everyone, but I was probably doing a lot more of a borderline-rated, single-planet R, spaghetti western,” Mangold said. “I was listening to Ennio Morricone all day, all night and typing. But I’m not sure that would ever have happened. I’m not sure that’s in anyone’s plans what I’m looking for. thought.
No, make an R-rated limit star wars the movie probably wasn’t in the cards. And then, well, that would never happen anyway. Asked about the project’s ending, the director said it ended because of “a moment of corporate realignment after everything that happened with the Han Solo movie.” Which, if you recall, was the time in 2018 when Solo did not live up to expectations and the future star wars stand-alone films focused on characters like Boba Fett and Obi-Wan Kenobi have been cancelled. “They suddenly decided they weren’t doing footage like that, and I think the streaming opportunities presented themselves,” he said.
But, there is a positive side to this. Mangold agrees that because his vision of Boba Fett isn’t what we ended up seeing either The Mandalorian Or Boba Fett’s Bookhe gave way to creator Jon Favreau to change the face of star wars for all time. “The world could never kiss Baby Yoda if I did that,” Mangold said. “He didn’t really belong in the world I imagined.”
And, of course, now he’s working on a new star wars movie. This one is about the first person to discover and use the Force. Let’s hope this one actually happens.
See Mangold’s new movie, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Fate, in theaters now. Boba Fett can be seen on both The Mandalorian And Boba Fett’s Book on Disney+
