Barbiewhich stars Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling and was directed by Greta Gerwig, is set to hit theaters on July 21. However, the film was banned in Vietnam due to scenes featuring the controversial so-called nine-dash line.
A spokesperson for Cruz claimed Daily mail that the Barbie the film “pushes Chinese propaganda”.
“Senator Cruz has been fighting for years to prevent corporate America, especially Hollywood studios, from editing and censoring their content to appease the Chinese Communist Party,” the spokesperson said.
“China wants to control what Americans see, hear, and ultimately think, and they’re leveraging their huge movie markets to coerce corporate America into pushing CCP propaganda, much like how the movie Barbie seems to have done it with the map. Senator Cruz deserves credit for reversing these trends,” the spokesperson added.
The spokesperson went on to refer to legislation Cruz drafted and passed last year that prevents government cooperation on “films that engage in exactly this type of censorship.”

Prohibitions in Vietnam Barbie
This came after Vietnam was banned Barbie, indicating that the map representing the so-called nine-dash line of China is featured in several scenes. In Vietnam, all films must be approved by censors who filter out gratuitous violence, suggestive sex scenes or politically sensitive material.
“The film review committee has looked at the film and made the decision to ban the screening of this film in Vietnam due to a violation of the ‘nine-dash line,'” said Vi Kien Thanh, director of the Vietnamese Film Department.

“We do not license American film Barbie to be published in Vietnam because it contains the offensive image of the nine-dash line,” Thanh said in another statement, according to CBS News.
China has been promoting the so-called nine-dash line in the South China Sea since the 1940s. This so-called line stretches off the Chinese island of Hainan and passes near the coast of Vietnam. Malaysia, the Philippines and Vietnam have all since claimed parts of the South China Sea, which straddle the nine-dash line.

The Philippines is also threatening to ban Barbie
The Philippines has also threatened to join Vietnam in banning Barbieif the nine-dash line is there.
“If the invalidated line in nine dashes was well represented in the film Barbieit is then incumbent on the Movie and Television Review and Classification Board of the Philippines to prohibit that which denigrates Philippine sovereignty,” said Philippine Senator Francis Tolentino, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Tolentino went on to say that editing the offending scenes could be a “half-way” compromise for Philippine regulators and the film studio. If that were to happen, however, it would risk angering cinema regulators in China.
The Film and Television Review and Classification Board of the Philippines issued a brief statement on Thursday which read: “We confirm that the Board has reviewed the film Barbie today, 04 July 2023. Currently, the First Review Committee is deliberating on Warner Brothers FE Inc.’s application for an exhibition permit.

It’s just the latest in a long line of examples of Hollywood treating China like it’s their job. We commend Cruz for continuing to call out Hollywood for her submission to China in such a blatant and sickening way.
